A Clinical Study of Carcinoma of Colon

Abstract
A clinical study of cancer of colon were done for 68 patients hisologically confirmed and treated
surgically from Jan. 1962 to November, 1970 at the department of surgery, Seoul National Uni
versity Hospital.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The male were 47 cases and the female 21 cases, ratio was 2.2:1. The most frequent age
group being 51 to 80 years (33.8%), and average age incidence was 52.3 years.
2. The duration of the diswase prior to entry were within one year in 65% and 35% were more
than one year.
3. The symptoms of right colon were; pain 72%, bowel habit change associated with diarrhea
37%, anemia 31%, melena 29%, palpable mass 17%, and the left colon were; pain 33%, tarry
stool 53%, bowel habit change associated with constipation 55%, anemia 18%, obstruction 7%,
performed panperitonitis 2%.
4. Location of cancer were 38.3% at sigmoid colom, 22.1% at cacum, 13.3% at ascending colon,
11.7% at transverse colon, 7.5% at descending colon, 6.1% at splecin flexure, 4.5% at hepatic
flexure.
5. Diagnosis was made by barium enema 84%, sigmoidoscopy 80%.
6. Preoperatove colon preparation were performed by mechanical washing and antibiotics such as
Neomycin, Kanamycin, Sulfa drugs. There was no evidence of pseudomembranous staphylococcal
enterocolitis.
7. Resectablity was 66%.
8. Histologically they were adenocarcinoma without exception.
9. Post-operative complication were 34%, and mortality was 7.5%.
